BURNT BRIDGES

Burnt Bridges is located in the Ashley's Grove community near Conway, NC.  There were originally 3 bridges across three runs of Potecasi Creek.  There are remnants of the latest version of the bridge on the main run of the creek.  The bridges date back to colonial times, being on the main road between Murfreesboro and Woodland.  The bridges were abandoned when Highway 258 was built and a new bridge was built about a mile east of the old location.

Contrary to local lore, the bridges were not named after any Civil War action, but were named for an earlier incident which we have not been able to pinpoint yet.  We do know that is was called Burnt Bridges as early as the late 1770's because a deed to a nearby property was described as being "on the road to the Burnt Bridges".

The area near Burnt Bridges was a popular place for picnics as well as the local swimming hole and the site of many baptisings up until the early 1950's.  Sadly, the area fell into a sad state because people seemed to think this was a public dump and there is quite a lot of trash which we are working to clean up.

There is a lot of wildlife near the creek, including some "creepy crawlies", one of which can be seen here   There is also a heron rookery with two nests in it.   Some shots of it can be seen here.

This image shows the remnants of the bridge on the main run of Potecasi Creek.
This is a little closer view of the remnants.  The concrete abutment on the near side has fallen over, and there are only three pilings left.  These appear to be made of corrugated pipe filled with concrete.  I assume there were three others, which are probably lying flat on the bottom
This image is from late Spring.
This is a sunset shot looking west towards the "big run".
One of the most colorful birds in our part of the country, this little wood duck was doing a great job of posing for the camera.
